National 5 Maths
Volume
Course content
- Volume of cuboid, cube and prisms (formulae not given)
- Volume of sphere, cone and pyramid (formulae given)
- Finding radius or height given the volume
- Compound solids, eg. a hemisphere on top of a cone.
Prism
A prism is a three-dimensional shape with a uniform cross-section.
What this means is that it will have ends of equal shape and size. If you slice through the solid, parallel to either end, the shape that you cut through will be the same as the ends.
Examples:
A cuboid is a rectangular prism.
A cube is a square prism.
A cylinder isn't technically a circular prism, because its cross-section isn't bounded by straight edges, but it behaves like a circular prism.

Key ideas
- Volume is the 3D space inside a solid.
- Volume is measured in cubic units: mm3, cm3, m3 etc.
- For liquids, millilitres (\(ml\)) or litres (\(l\)) are often used. 1 \(ml\) = 1 cm3.

Formulae to learn
$$ \begin{eqnarray} &&\textsf{Volume of a cuboid:}&\:&V = lbh\\[6pt] &&\textsf{Volume of a cube:}&\:&V=l^3\\[6pt] &&\textsf{Volume of a prism:}&\:&V=Ah\\[6pt] \end{eqnarray} $$
Given formulae
$$ \begin{eqnarray} &&\textsf{Volume of a sphere:}&\:&V=\small\frac{4}{3}\normalsize\pi r^3\\[6pt] &&\textsf{Volume of a cone:}&\:&V=\small\frac{1}{3}\normalsize\pi r^{2}h\\[6pt] &&\textsf{Volume of a pyramid:}&\:&V=\small\frac{1}{3}\normalsize Ah\\[6pt] \end{eqnarray} $$
Note that a cone behaves like a 'circular-based pyramid'. Its base area \(A=\pi r^2\).
